PROCEDURE TEXT

Hallo everybody...., especially you are my lovely students at SMKN 45 Jakarta.

English material that we will discuss now is Procedure Text. Before I explain it, I want to ask you,Do you like cooking? Cooking is something that usually we do every day, especially for woman. Cooking can be enjoyment if we like it but there are some people lazy to cook or even afraid because, they cannot create delicious food. To help them, people who cannot cook, they can see recipes. Recipes are very helpful. When we want to make delicious food, we need recipe because there are steps that can lead us in it. Recipe is an example of procedure text. Another example is book instruction. When you buy a new TV or a new phone cell, there must be a book instruction in the box. Book instruction also one of the examples of procedure text. When you want to download something from the internet, there are steps before we do that. Those steps also procedure text. Then, what is procedure text actually?

Definition of Procedure Text

There are three definition about procedure text : 

1. Texts that explain how something works or how to use instruction / operation manuals 

    e.g. how to  use the video, the computer, the tape recorder, the photocopier, the fax. 

2. Texts that instruct how to do a particular activity 

    e.g. recipes, rules for games, science experiments, road safety rules. 

3. Texts that deal with human behavior, 

    e.g how to live happily, how to succeed

Purpose of Procedure Text

1. To explain/tell (the reader) how to make/operate/do something through a sequence of actions or  
     steps.
2. To explain steps/instruction to make/operate/do something

Generic Structure of Procedure Text

1. Goal : (e.g : How to make spaghetti)

2. Material or Ingredient : (e.g : the material to cook omelette are egg, onion, vegetable oil, etc. )
3. Step : (e.g : first, wash the tomatoes, onion, …., second cut the onions becomes slice. . . )

 Language Feature of Procedure Text

   1. Use adverbial of sequence / Using temporal Conjunctions.

       e.g: first, second, third, the last, then, while, after that, next, finally and much more 
   2. Use command / imperative sentence 

       e.g : put the noodles on the . . ., cut the onion. . ., wash the tomatoes. . .
  3. Using adverbials (Adverbs) to express detail the time, place, manner accurate, for example, 

       for five minutes, 2 hours, 30 seconds to a minute, and many more.
  4. Using action verbs, 

      e.g : make, take, boil, cook
  5. Using Simple Present Tense
      e.g. Cappuccino is one of the best and famous coffee. It has caffeine in a cup of cappuccino.

Examples of Procedure Text

1. Operating manual

1. Make sure that the printer device softwere have been installed in your computer.
2. Prepare the printer by checking the amount of paper and the ink.
3. To begin with, plug in the printer and connect it to your computer.
4. Turn on your printer.
5. Open the document you'd like to print and then press CTRL + P buttons on your computer keyboard.
6. Klik 'Ok' at the bottom of the pop-up screen to print.
7. Your docuement will begin printing.

2. Instruction

1        1. Go to an ATM and insert an ATM card. Make sure that the ATM card is inserted through 

              the side with bank logo and chip and then taken out.

2        2. Next account holder will be required to select the language of his / her choice.

3        3. Now use the keypad and enter the four-digit PIN. Entering the wrong PIN can get the ATM card 

              blocked.

4        4. Now, choose the transaction type from options such as – Withdraw Money, Balance Enquiry,  

              Deposit Money, Bill Pay, and others. To withdraw cash, opt for the ‘Withdraw Money’ option.

5        5. Next account holder will be required to select the account type – current or savings or any other.

6        6. Enter the amount to withdraw by pressing the keypad and press ok/enter. Make sure there is 

              sufficient balance available in the account.

7        7. Collect the money and withdrawal receipt which is proof of the transaction as well. It also 

              contains account balance available after the withdrawal.

    8. End the session by pressing the cancel/cross button.

3. Recipes

 

How To Make Fruit Ice

                  Materials :

·         Mango

·         Avocado

·         Sugar water

·         Milk

·         Ice

·         Apple

·         Strawberries

·         Wine

·         Jackfruit

                 

                  Steps :

1.      First, Cut the fruit round or dice.

2.      Then, Scratching the flesh of a melon.

3.      Then, Boil sugar with water until cooked for about 30 minutes.

4.      Next, Put in serving glasses that have been cut round pieces or dice.

5.      Then, to taste Pour the sugar water, put ice cubes and put milk on ice fruit.

6.      Last, put the decorations on the glass with a piece of strawberry on it.

                             How to make a Cheese Omelet

Ingredients:
1 egg, 50 g cheese, 1 cup milk, 3 tablespoons cooking oil, a pinch of salt and pepper.

Utensils:
Frying pan, fork, spatula, cheese-grater, bowl, and plate.

Method:
• Crack the egg into a bowl
• Whisk the egg with a fork until it’s smooth
• Add milk and whisk well
• Grate the cheese into the bowl and stir
• Heat the oil in frying pan
• Turn the omelet with spatula and cook both sides
• Place on a plate, season with salt and pepper

Recipe for French Toast

You are going to need:
4 pieces of bread
1 spoon of sugar
2 eggs
A quarter of a cup of milk
Butter
Pan
Fork
Bowl

Before you start to cook, you have to read the recipe.
Now you can get ready. After you read the recipe, put everything on the counter.
When everything is ready, break the eggs, pour a quarter of the milk in the bowl, then add a small spoon of sugar. Mix the eggs, milk and sugar.
Next, put a piece of bread in the bowl with the eggs, milk and sugar. Turn over the bread. Now, put some butter in the pan. Turn on the stove. When the pan is hot, take the bread out of the bowl and put it into the pan. After you cook one side of the bread, cook the other side. After you finish the first place of the bread, cook the other pieces. Now you have French toast!
